Private
Co. K, 38th Indiana Volunteers Infantry.
breeden,silass.1835 Silas S. Breeden and Ronald Eugene YATES are related by marriage to his 1st cousin four times removed, Sarah Roberson, Daughter of George and Frances Roberson

We do not know the exact details of his day to day service but we know he served with the familiar Company K, 38th Indiana Volunteers Infantry. We have recently been able to identify that while serving with the 38th he died on August 25, 1863 in Decherd, TN and buried at Stones River National Cemetery about 25 miles east of Nashville. The Civil War dominated life in Decherd during the war years. No major battles were fought in the area, but several skirmishes were fought over control of the railroad and Elk River. In 1863 Federals under Colonel John T. Wilder drove a Confederate force from Decherd and destroyed about 300 yards of the railroad between Decherd and Cowan.

From pension records we know that Sarah began a widow's pension starting October 28 1863 through March 1878. This may be the date of her death but this is unknown.

The 53rd Illinois Volunteers Infantry was ordered to St. Louis on March 23, and from St. Louis to Savannah, Tenn. It was engaged in the siege of Corinth, and for meritorious conduct on the skirmish line was furnished with new Springfield rifles. The following October, near the Hatchie river, it en-gaged four times its number of the enemy, who were retreating from the battle of Corinth, and moved steadily forward, holding the bridge and road for over 2 hours until other troops could be crossed and placed in position. The regiment lost in that battle 16 killed and 49 wounded.

It there assisted in running a section of artillery (a Missouri battery) up the bluff by hand, placing it within 50 yards of the enemy's line, and supported it while it did splendid work. The regiment participated in the gallant but disastrous charge by Gen. Lauman at Jackson, Miss., on July 12, 1863, going into the fight with 250 men and officers and coming out with but 66.

Private
Co. K, 21st Illinois Volunteers Infantry.
Robert Calvin Carpenter

Robert Calvin Carpenter is Ronald Eugene YATES's 2G Uncle. The 21st Illinois was known as an unruly group of guys which took some extra effort to mold into a product force of war. Two of my 2G Uncles served in this unit. Abner Griffin Carpenter served until he had his arm blown off by a musket at Kennesaw Mountain. His brother Robert Calvin served until his death February 11, 1863. In September and October 1862 Robert Calvin was working as a teamster for the regiment. At some point he encounters an unknown circumstance which causes him to find himself housed in a jail facility. For some unknown reason he decides to leap from the jail which results in comminuted fractures of both of his legs and he is hospitalized and thereafter expires.
