2 Cpl. Joshua C. Blaney

Cpl. Blaney, 25, of Matthews, NC,stationed with 173rd Airborne in Vicenza, Italy passed away December 12, 2007 serving his country in Afghanistan as a result of his convoy being hit by an IED. Joshua was born September 15, 1982 in Charlotte, NC, the son of Dianne B. Massey and Charles Edward Blaney. Josh graduated from Butler High School in 2002. Joshua was an exceptional young man with a compassionate and loving heart for his family and those that were fortunate enough to know him were his friends for life.
Cpl. Blaney made the combat jump into Northern Iraq on March 26, 2003 for which he received the Parachutist Badge with Bronze Service Star which opened the northern front and ultimate success of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In Iraq he was wounded on December 12, 2003, and received a Purple Heart.
Cpl. Blaney also served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan from February 2005 to February 2006. He was deployed to Afghanistan for a second tour in May 2007, and paid the ultimate sacrifice on December 12, 2007 receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Josh received the Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NATO Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge for Iraq and Afghanistan.
Funeral services to celebrate Joshua's life will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, December 21, 2007 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, officiated by the Reverend Arnold Kessler. Interment will follow at Charlotte Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers are from the 82nd Airborne Division, Ft. Bragg, NC. Honorary Pallbearers are Josh's lifelong friends, Joshua Edwards, Brian Williams, Greg St. Martin, Ben Green, Ben Fields, Trent Guilland, and Nick Brooks.
Visitation will be held at McEwen Funeral Service Mint Hill Chapel and from Noon to 2:00 P.M., Friday, December 21, 2007 prior to the church service. Josh is survived by his mother, Dianne B. Massey and husband Eric of Ft. Mill, SC; father, Charles E. Blaney of Matthews, NC; brother, Eddie Allen and wife Misty of Kershaw, SC; sister, Carley Blaney of Matthews, NC; stepsister, Angie Massey of Rock Hill, SC; stepbrother, Todd Massey and wife Kelly of Rock Hill, SC; grandfather, Sidney Belk of Charlotte, NC; aunt and uncles, Greg Belk and wife Sheri of Charleston, SC, Pat Belk of Indian Trail, NC, Amy Belk and husband Mike of Charlotte, NC, and Kenneth Blaney of Yorktown, VA; nieces and nephews, Ashley Allen, Brandon Allen, Austin Surratt, Chase Allen, Matthew Allen, Talayeh Joel, Naiya Ellis; and numerous cousins and friends.

Born March 21, 1985; Died in duty for our country on September 1, 2006. In his short life, Cliff touched the hearts of all who knew and loved him. By his example of faithfulness, goodness and determination, he inspired those all around him to dream, love and live for a better world. Cliff was a peaceful young man, a faithful friend, a loyal Marine and a loving son and brother. 'We love you, Cliff. Your smile will never be forgotten. You will live in our hearts forever.' A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 16, 2006 at St. Matthew Catholic Church with Msgr. John McSweeney, celebrant. Interment will follow at Crown Memorial Park in the Veterans Honor Garden. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, September 15, 2006 at 7:00 - 9:00 PM at St. Matthew Catholic Church in the Day Chapel.

9 ARTHUR D. WHITTINGTON
Mr. Whittington, 90, of Charlotte affectionately known to his friends as "Art" and "Whitt" died peacefully Monday evening, August 10, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital-Main. He was born April 29, 1919 in Durham, NC, son to the late Arthur D. and Kathleen Whittington. As a pharmaceutical salesman with Cutter Laboratories, he was recognized as a National Salesman of the Year on a number of occasions. The company awarded him with a number of trips, one which took him to Germany, behind the iron curtain where he had fought with General Patton's Third Army during World War II. Following his military commitment he continued his education, graduating from Duke University in 1947. He was a loyal supporter of his Blue Devils until his death. An active member of Myers Park Baptist Church since 1953, he was a dedicated member of the Fifth Dimension Sunday school Class and a long-time usher at the church. Art was an avid golfer and one of the original members of Carmel Country Club. He with his wife enjoyed being keepers of the Mammoth Oaks Community Park for a number of years. His many volunteer activities included volunteering for the past 25 years at CMC-Main. He was preceded in death by his son, Arthur Donnell "Donn" Whittington in 1971 and out of love for their son, Art and Brownie were one of the founding parents of the Nevins Center, Inc. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Frances "Brownie" Whittington, son, Thomas Edwin Whittington of Palm City, FL; and granddaughter, Heather Kathleen Whittington of Frederick, MD. He is also survived by a number of cousins. A memorial service celebrating his life will be at 11:00 AM Friday, August 14, 2009 at Myers Park Baptist Church.A reception will follow at the church in Heaton Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Myers Park Baptist Church Sunshine Fund, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207-0001. CHARLOTTE -- Mrs. Lois Mesenbrink Wilhelm, 73, of Charlotte, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center. Born July 29, 1925, in Bellwood, Ill., Mrs. Wilhelm attended St. John's Lutheran School and Proviso Township High School, as well as Valparaiso University. She was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church and the Republican Women's Club and served as a volunteer for Presbyterian Orthopedic Hospital. Survivors include her husband, Norman D. Wilhelm, whom she married September 6, 1947; son, Timothy Wilhelm and his wife, Terri, of Charlotte; daughter, Debra Wilhelm Carter, of Durham; sister, Dorothy Wright, of Battle Creek, Mich.; and four grandchildren. Katie and Mike Wilhelm and Lynsey and Cathleen Carter. A service of worship in Mrs. Wilhelm's memory will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 14, in the Hankins & Whittington Chapel, with her pastor, the Reverend William Beyer, officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Private interment will be in Forest Lawn East Cemetery, in Matthew at a later date. CHARLOTTE -- Mr. Norman D. Wilhelm, 73, of Charlotte, died March 28, 1999 at Carolina Medical Center. A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 1999 at McEwen Funeral Service Charlotte Chapel with Pastor William Beyer officiating. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Family will receive friends today from 7-9 p.m. tonight, at the funeral home. Mr. Wilhelm was born on February 27, 1926 in LaPorte, Indiana, the son of the late Leo and Alice Wilhelm and the brother of Robert Wilhelm and Marge Wilhelm Beall, both deceased. He attended Valparaiso University where he met his wife of 51 years, Lois Mesenbrink Wilhelm, prior to serving in the Navy during WWII. He graduated from Purdue University. Norm was retired from Rea Construction Company. During his career he was active on the Carolinas AGC, American Concrete Pavers Association and other trade organizations. Norm was an active member of All Saints Lutheran Church, Queen City Optimist Club, the U. S. Power Squadron and USS LSM-LSMR Association. Norm was an avid sailor and boatman who embraced life to its fullest. Together with his wife Lois, he enjoyed traveling throughout the world. He will be remembered for his strong sense of integrity, his role as mentor to many, and his wonderful wit. Earlier this month Mr. Wilhelm was predeceased by his loving wife Lois. He is survived by his son, Tim Wilhelm and wife, Terri and daughter Debra Wilhelm Carter; grandchildren; Katie and Mike Wilhelm and Lynsey and Cathleen Carter.
