| 13 | June 8, 1866 Certified Copy of their Marriage License. This document was written by J. M. Lemands, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Crawford County in Leavenworth, Indiana. It shows that their marriage license was issued on August 6th, 1847 by Samuel Sands, then the Clerk of the Court, at Leavenworth, In. It further shows them married on Aug. 8th, 1847, two days after the license was issued. They were married by John Seaton, J.P. In the above mentioned "Declaration" document, J. M. Lemands describes John Seaton as a "minister of the gospel", probably was bi-vocational, both a JP. and a Minister? It also shows their Certificate of Marriage filed in the Clerks office on Aug. 28th, 1847, just 20 days after their marriage. This document is completed in very bold and beautiful handwriting in the appropriate blanks certifying to all concerned the Legal marriage of John Yates to Elizabeth Roberson. | Family: F8

| 22 | 7/3/2008-I do have one more story that illustrates the extent and depth of the connection between the Hensley and Adams families. This is the only story that my mother seemed to enjoy telling. When my grandmother Barbara was born to Angeline and Isaac, Jepthah and his family went over to see the new baby. Twelve-year-old Winfield even held the tiny infant in his arms--the infant who would become his wife 16 years later, and bear his children. | Barbara Allen Adams

From the military records, I learned that the date of his injury was September 1, 1864, suffered in the Battle of Jonesboro, that his leg was amputated, and that he died on the train on the way to the government hospital in Chattanooga. I checked the history of the 125th (which you sent me earlier) and learned that on September 1, 1864, there was a two hour battle during which the enemy suffered greatly, and then at 4 p.m., “...we assaulted the enemy's lines across open fields...” I believe this was the fatal battle. The history of the 125th records the burning of Atlanta late that night by the rebels as they fled. I learned in Wikipedia that the famous fire scenes of “Gone With the Wind” depict this event. | Isaac N. Adams

(b. @1839), James F. (b. @1843; same company), William H. (b. @1846), John S. (b. @1848), Charles (b. @1851), Samuel (b. @1859); age 17 at enlistment in Co. (b. Aug. 1882); post-Civil War farmer and hardware dealer. Date: June 5, 1864 Author: John Yates Addressee: Elizabeth Roberson Yates Location: Dallas, GA Description/Summary: John is writing this letter on Sunday June 5, 1864 from Dallas, GA; this is about 25 miles southwest of Allatoona Mountains, GA, the site of his previous letter. John is taking a serious tone and it saying that it is only through the mercy of God that he now is alive and has the opportunity to write this letter to his family. He has written one letter to her since this battle began 10 days ago when they made this attack on the Rebels and the battle stopped at 9 AM this morning. He can't say how long it will be stopped as they have not learned yet what direction the Rebels have taken and what his unit's response will be one it comes. He says they have not been out of range of the Rebel guns over the last 9 days straight and the last 4 days they have been directly in front of his line. They have lost 3 men out of Companies E., H. and D. and James Gresham of E. has just died of his wounds [this turns out to be not true]; the other 2 are still alive as of this morning. John says that he, George Riggle and Tolbert McCraney are mess mates; fixing and eating meals together. [Tolbert will marry John's daughter Samantha so Tolbert is John's future son-in-law but will never know it.] It would appear that A. Adkins [Amos K. Adkins 1844-1901] of the 38th may have been taken prisoner but it is not yet confirmed. They will learn the truth once the train catches up with them as he was driving one of the teams. [Rather than Rail Road this may be a reference to baggage Train which traditionally follows the line troops.] John seems to be saying that he doesn't have an idea when this campaign might end even though it has been a month in progress; he says the hotter the fighting the better as the old saying is that peace will come sooner that way. They hope that in this case that will turn out to be true as everyone is getting war weary but they remain determined to end this Rebellion against the Country. John is expressing a thought that he says he will just say he saw a sight this morning he hopes to never see again in his life. The saw men who have been dead for 8 days lying out in the sun and he seems to be describing body gases of decomposition and maggots; he describes them as being full of creepers. The ones that he saw were lying so close to his own lines that he was consumed with the smell of rotting flesh. He is stopping his letter now as the mail is ready to go. He says to give his love to everyone but asks Elizabeth to take the greater portion of it for herself. He only has one more envelope and stamp and is unsure how he will resupply himself; he says he hasn't had a chew of tobacco for a week but found some old trash tobacco this morning and a good side of bacon; the Rebels had buried the bacon in the ground but they found it. PS. He asks to please excuse the hand writing as he has been lying on the ground in the mud and water for the last 48 hours and it was not safe to raise his head during the writing of the letter. | Amos K. Adkins

| 31 | I’m pretty sure that where the photographer was standing when that photo was taken that you linked, was in front of the general store that my grandfather (Craig T. Allen) operated until they left Leavenworth around 1918. I haven’t been to “old town” Leavenworth in over 25 years, but when I was there one time an old guy who lived in a trailer down there remembered my great grandfather W.B. Allen as well as my great grandfather Sam Jenner and showed me around. One of the few remaining buildings he showed me was a wooden building that I remember looking much like what is described in that photo as the warehouse. He said it was part of the Jenner Blacksmith Shop at one time and that he now owned it. He may have been slightly wrong but it looks like he was close. The old guy’s name was Jesse Melton – a name you have no doubt come across in your research. I know I have. Though I think he was a more recent Jesse than the one I see in the old records. My dad and my uncle (both born in 1908) remembered him from when they were kids in Leavenworth. Attached is a photo of my great grandfather William B. Allen’s home in Leavenworth. I can’t tell you what street or lot it was on. When I visited one time as a kid there was nothing left of it except the foundation. I think it got destroyed in the ’37 flood. | 34 | Thomas Allen and Rebecca Allen, cousins who were descendants of William Allen (1640-1685), who came to Rhode island from Wales, Yorkshire, England, to settle on Prudence Island in the Narragansett Bay. Thomas Allen was the son of a later William Allen and his wife, Freelove Tillinghast. Rebecca Allen was the daughter of John Allen and Rebeckah Hill. In his genealogy on the Prudence Island Allens, DeVere Allen writes in great detail about Thomas and Rebecca (Allen) Allen's family, which he calls the "blind Allens." This reflects the fact that the mother and several children were blind. In the 1790s, as the family tried to move to upstate New York from Prudence Island, several members perished on the boat they used. Some survived, but their story truly is a tragic one. | Rebecca Allen
