(AFN:9JXB-DQ) Married: 11 Jul 1798, Mercer Co., Kentucky John Laswell / Lacefield / Lazewell - born Abt 1770 Loudoun Co., Virginia; died 1840 - 1841 Cumberland Co., Kentucky. (AFN:9JXB-CK) Jane (Jinney) Smith - Born abt 1787, Amherst Co., Virginia Married: Joe Conn - born Notes: Carolynn Salas: I have seen reference to Pedlar on Inchanted Moutain. Is this Tobacco Mountain ??? The Gillespies are living in that area too. The researching problems are that this area fell into Orange Co., Virginia, Albemarle Co., Virginia and Amherst Co., Virginia records. Wm. Gillespie (Galsby) Moved from the Pedlar region to Madison Co., Kentucky in abt 1784. William Gillespie married Ann Hudson see note in Albemarle Co., Virginia and Amherst Co., Virginia deeds on pg 187 LOOKING FOR MARRIAGE RECORDS: There are no Hanover, Orange Co., Virginia records after 1822 There are no Orange Co., Virginia records (I sent a letter to the Clerk of Circuit Court and this is the answer: I've got a lot of William Smiths from 1757 to 1867 & not one of them married a Street, Clerk of Circuit Court) There are no New Kent records There are no Albemarle Co., Virginia records too late There are no Goochland Co., Virginia records too late There are no Louisa records too late. Why didn't I try Spotsylvannia Co., Amherst Co., & Caroline Co., Virginia ? My notes say marriages in Amherst Co., Virginia are supposed to Start in 1761, however, 1 found that they really start after 1763. Caroline Co., Virginia is a county that was burned and records destroyed. The Street Family Newsletter says that William Smith(, Sr.) married Elizabeth (Betsey) Street in Amherst Co., Virginia. I personally believe this is correct. The Smiths are already in the region when the Streets moved into this area. This was prior to the time of William Smith, Sr.'s proposed marriage to Elizabeth Street. Family tradition is that Jeremiah Molton (Jerry) Smith is the first born son of William Smith, Sr. He was (named 3rd in father's will) because of this strange name, I have looked for a Jeremiah Molton or a Jeremiah Melton for clues. Why would the Smith's name a child Jeremiah Molton Smith?? I have had no luck in finding an answer. Orange Co., Virginia has a Jeremiah Morton but I have found no relationship. I Tried Henrico Co., Virginia and found there is will in 1765 for David Melton. Wm Smith, Sr. and Jr. can also be found there. There are Moltons in Orange Co., Virginia. I tried to see if Elizabeth Street married first a Molton and then married Wm Smith with a child. I could not find any marriage record to prove this idea. Could Elizabeth's mother be a Molton instead of a Madison as others think ???? Jeremiah Moulton is from York Co., Maine and he died in 1765. Jeremiah Moulton Smith was born soon afterwards. I will bet Jeremiah Moulton is Jeremiah Moulton Smith's Grandpa !!! Believe it or not, I found a William Smith also in York Co., Maine. Family tradition has it that William Smith the husband of Elizabeth Street was born at sea. Is it possible that the Smiths were coming South by ship from Maine and then went up the James river into the area where the Streets were ? WHY ISN'T THERE a CHILD ANTHONY SMITH ? Did he die young? Did William Smith Serve in the Revolutionary War ? (C.Salas: I requested info on RW service and they said there was no record. I used location of Mercer, Ky, Cumberland, Ky and wife Betsey) No record in Barren Co., Ky. There is a William Smith on Orange County Military Commissions for Service in State Malitia August 1777 2nd Lieut p 573 in court orders. But, Son Wm Whole America Smith is born in 1772 in Amherst. Could William be in Orange and wife with her parents in Amherst? The general area of Orange was hugh? But, there are many William Smiths in this area? LOCATION: son says born below Tobacco Mountain on James River. This appears to have been in Goochland Co., Virginia in 1728; Albemarele Co., Virginia in 1744; then Amherst Co., Virginia in 1761. "Tobacco Mountain on James River" is East of Pedlar River and West of Cedar Creek and just North of James. It is east of the "Blue Ridge". 1780 Albemarle John Smith and Thomas witness to will of James Burgess. 1783 Thomas Smith dies. 1784 15 Mar 1784 a Wm. Smith of Amherst Co., Va sells to Geo. Davis of Amherst Co., Va for 650, 120 acres both sides of Cedar Creek; lower part of 480 acres grantor got by deed from Joel Watkins, Lines: Wm. Peter, a little below his mill; Thos. Morris, Joel Watkins' former line, David Burks, Hugh McCabe. Wit: Jos. Goodwin, Jno. Hogg, Edwd. Saunderson, Wm. Peter. (1771 Anthony Street sold 170 acres to Nich. Davis on Fluvannah/James) note: Nicholas Davis is of Cumberland Co., Va. and Joel Watkins of Prince Edward Co. Joel sells 480 acres Cedar Creek to Rich Peter. It is possible William is son of Thomas Smith. Thomas mentions 3 boys in will and William witnesses it. Then he is selling 1/4 of 480 acres of land. I could not find a deed where William or Thomas purchased this land. 1784 a William Smith purchases 666 acres of land on Cumberland River. This land at one time belonged to Robert Campbell who also owned land on Marrowbone Creek (or Crocus Creek as it was first known) see note for May 1790 for more land. 1788 North Carolina Military Reservation covers present day central Tennessee. Jennings Creek is first tributary off of Cumberland as it goes into the Tennessee, in N. C. Military Reservation and would be on the eastern border. So, reference to being from "Eastern Tennessee" is valid. However, land was also in Kentucky Dist., Virginia May 1790 Davidson Co., Tennessee; William Smith receives 640 acres from North Carolina. This land on Millcreek with lines Lander Clarks, Cockrills, Jason Thompson. This land was surveyed in 1785 in consequence of a warrant #599 located Oct 1784; grant signed 1788 (C. Salas: Mill Creek on Cumberland is adjacent to Jennings Creek where Josiah Campbell Smith is said to be born.) 1793 in Rutherford N. C. from deeds of Amherst and Albemarle, Vir. Ordered to J.P. of Rutherford N.C. to quiz wives of Thos. Street, Wm Smith and Howsend Harrell to sell Anthony Street property (I think they (Smiths) were not in Rutherford, but that Rutherford had the legal jurisdiction over area where they lived) IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER all of Tennessee was once N.C. 1795 Captain Ford's District of Washington Co., Tennessee and territory of United States south of River Ohio tax list has: Jermiah Campbell 100 A, Wm Moreland 100, Wm. Smith 100, Samuel Tate 175, Isaac Campbell 50, John Tate 50, John Smith 1500, Samuel Smith 0, Zachariah Campbell 0, Zachariah Campbell 100, Nicholas Smith 0, Jacob Smith 1000, James Jones 200, James Campbell, Edward Smith Esq 600, William Jones 100 and lots of Millers. Looks like my group. These folks not on 1796 or 1797 tax lists Beginning of this tax book notes that Washington Co., Tennessee formed from Wilkes & Burke Co's., North Carolina 1797 William recorded 640 acres from North Carolina in Middle District on Cave Creek on the waters of Elk River about three or four miles from mouth of said creek. land surveyed Nov 1792 in consequence of warrent #1439 located Jan 1784 grant signed 1794. In Green Co, Kentucky records another is filing 100 acres on the south side of Cumberland River below the mouth of Marrowbone Creek and refers to a Line westwardly binding on William Smiths Neighbors: Francis Nicholas, Peter Jump and John Evans, Absalom Evans and John Miller Then in 1798, William Smith is entitled to 200 acres on south side of Green River and William Smiths begining corner on William Jones line and with Smith line and on Clarks line and thence out westwardly for quanity to be laid off as near in a square as the interfering claims will admit of the improvement is near the East side of the survey. Is this Wm Jr's (Whole America) claim? Might explain how he has 140 acres and not 200 as everyone else gets or is this just William Sr. getting more land and again William Smith is entitled to 200 acres of land on the south side of Cumberland River EARLY KENTUCKY LANDHOLDERS 1787-1811 has a William since 1787 in 1789 says he is shoemaker and in 1791 has a Charles with him. In 1792 He has 40 acres in Lincoln. in 1795 William Jr. 200 acres on Sugar Cr. in Lincoln. In 1796 the 40 acres are listed on Dicks/Dix by 1799 there is 115 acres on Dicks from J. Navel/Newell/Neville. These 115 acres are referred to as Hanging Fk or Dix River. Would bet it is on Hanging Fk of Dix River. Also in 1799 we begin having 200 acres on Rockcastle .. W. Pearl/Pearrell Perril was prior assignee. In 1805 additional 243 acres added on Rockcastle with prior assignee A. Ross. by 1809 1000 acres on Rockcastle but now in Madison. Think this is our man. Laswell/Lacefield has property on Rockcastle. (John Lacefield marries Dicey Smith) 1804 William Smith of Cumberland Co and Nathan Thurman of Campbell Co., Ky purchase land upper side of the forest bottom above the mouth of Marrowbone etc. two parcels (950 & 330) Which William. Father or son? 1808 William Smith of Marrowbone is government agent to inspect tobacco etc. Wm Jr. marries a Campbell. Several Campbells have land on Hanging FK James, Joseph and Samuel and on Dicks/Dix there is : Alexander, John, Joseph, Moses, Rachel Daughter Luraner/Mary/Molly marries John Taylor. Taylors have land on Hanging Fk and Dicks. Also Scaggs. son Thomas marries a Harramon. Valentine Harmon has lots of land on Rockcastle 1808 William Smith of Cumberland Co., Ky purchases 390 less 100 acres on south side of Cumberland River. Paid $1,000 kentucky currency. Father or Son?? WILL:1814 William Smith of Cumberland Co., Ky leaves will naming "my eight children" William, Thomas, Jerry, Aney, Lydia, Bunesen (Looks like Buniren or Cuniren to me), Disey, Tenestrue. From Evelyn Rosemary Frantz:Deed Book G pg 175 9-10-1830: Wm. Smith, Joseph Park and w Anne, John Lacefield and wife Diecy, John Taylor and w Luinai, & Lydia Lafferty, Wm F. Smith, James Park & W. Anna, David Crew and w Elizabeth, Heirs of Will M Smith dec to Heirs of Elizabeth Duckwork, Dec. Land on Marrowbone Creek. She then asks who are the heirs of Elizabeth Duckwork. Will lists Bunesen & Tenestrue and asks what could they mean? C. Salas: I would think that William and Elizabeth Street Smith would have named a child Anthony and Elizabeth for her parents. So, could Elizabeth Duckwork be daughter?? and Bunesen & Tenestrue children of Anthony???? A family history written by grandson, says Jeremiah is oldest and Thomas is younger than William (America) 1791 listed with William. by 1794 has 400 acres on Rockcastle in Lincoln Co Kentucky. Christopher has 100 on Dicks in 1796 part of Bledsoe land 1811 Elias has 60 on Dicks. George in 1793 has 100 on rockcastle James first 1789 listed then in 1792 listed with Mary Smith as minor and in 1793 has 1250 acres on Rockcastle. 1793 listed with Mary again and then no longer on Rockcastle 1796 John has 50 on Dicks 1809 Peter has 250 on Rockcastle 1800 Reuben has 137 on Dix 1792 Scarlet has 100 on Dix 1787 start seeing Thomas but no land mentioned gatherer of info on Smith/Street line: John Sissom, 1312 Corvair Court, Kokomo, In 46902-2531 Family Group Record Husband: William SMITH Sr. Birth: 1740 Death: Mar 1817 Cumberland Co., KY Burial: Marriage: abt 1760 Amherst Co., VA Wife: Elizabeth STREET Birth: abt 1744 Orange Co., VA Death: 1830 Mercer Co., KY AKA: Betty or Betsy Burial: Father: Anthony STREET (b abt 1710) Mother: Elizabeth BROCKMAN (b abt 1715) Children 1 M Jeremiah Hobart SMITH Birth: abt 1765 Amherst Co., VA Will: 25 Mar 1817 Barren Co., KY Probate: May 1817 Barren Co., KY Death: bef 25 May 1817 Barren Co., KY AKA: Jerry Burial: Spouse: Dianah HENSON (m abt 1787) 2 _ Infant SMITH Birth: abt 1767 3 F Luiani SMITH Birth: abt 1769 Spouse: John TAYLOR 4 M William SMITH Birth: 2 Sep 1772 James River, Amherst Co., VA Death: 8 Jan 1845 Barren Co., KY AKA: Whole America Spouse: Margaret CAMPBELL (m 30 Nov 1793) 5 F Lydia Frances SMITH Birth: abt 1775 Amherst Co., VA AKA: Franky Spouse: John TAYLOR 6 M Thomas SMITH Birth: abt 1777 Amherst Co., VA 7 F Dicey SMITH Birth: abt 1779 Amherst Co., VA Death: 1876 Spouse: John LACEFIELD (m 11 Jul 1798) 8 F Anna SMITH Birth: abt 1781 Amherst Co., VA Spouse: Henry JARRETT Spouse: Joseph PARKE 9 F Jane SMITH Birth: abt 1783 Amherst Co., VA AKA: Jinney Spouse: Joe CONN Prepared 27 Mar 1999 by: L.
